Is it worth the time and money to do a video resume?
I was recently approached by a local video production company to see if I’d like a free video resume that they could then use as a demo to up sell their services.
Knowing that Mel Gibson had nothing to fear I said yes, and here is the result: Dan Horn’s Video Resume
A number of things came up from shooting this video and the comments I received about using it to find a job.
Keep these in mind when you do a video resume:
- The first thing I’d suggest is that you need a more tightened up script than I had, I wasn’t told I needed one so didn’t prepare one prior to the shoot.
- You should always dress how you want to be represented in the business world, I’m not a formal three piece suit type of guy and thing my attire reflected that.
- I didn’t make any suggestions or have any input during the edit of the video but think they did an amazing job and got my message across quite well, other might want to emphasis various aspects of their career but this was an introduction to Dan Horn.
- Be sure to remember that a video resume is really a video business card or video brief, you only have some much time and attention and you really just want the hiring manager to be impressed with your marketing and messaging savvy not go out and buy popcorn and a Coke.
What do you do with it once you have it?
- I first posted it on my hosting service, SiteGround.com, so that I could always be sure to not have people sign up, or have to monkey around with YouTube.
- With that said I posted it on YouTube with some key words and tags to see if that might get more play and to be able to use their embed scripts to add to my website and others.
- I’ve now uploaded it to LinkedIn, VisualCV, HireMe.TV and other resume postings sites that allow video.
- The main movie files I’ve edited using the iMovie application on the Mac and then written to a DVD using iDVD on the Mac, I now have a DVD to hand out with printed labels that have my contact information.
Comments and suggestions:
Things to keep in mind and think about based upon comments from various trusted recruiters.
Liz Carter of Lizabteh Carter Group
“I like the layout, but I question how many people will click to watch the video. I also question how individuals will get this past “HR” or a “Recruiter” to get it in front the hiring manager. I think it’s probably a good tool to have on a personal website, but until the whole resume standard is turned upside down, it won’t replace the traditional resume.
A good cover letter addressing specific needs of the company and the position you are going for is critical. A video might not pick up on the key aspects a company is looking for and may actually hinder a candidate. For instance, in your video you talk about CNN – what if the hiring manager doesn’t like CNN? You can’t recover from the sound bite.”
John Popowski of ROI Recruiting
“From a recruiters perspective, what’s more important is the transferability, portability, robustness, ability to load into a database, uncorrupted, and capture in same or similar format, etc.
The ability to generate as pdf here is critical. I haven’t tried to upload into my ATS, but assume it would work ok. Did note some minor corruption on generation of the pdf; bullets weren’t rendered correctly. Other than that, looks pretty good.
People still don’t seem to get that when it comes to resumes, the product they generate on their PC may not be the product the recipient sees – different versions of word, or a different word processing system altogether, import into a database (and resulting changes) emailed around, whatever.
Pretty is important, but longevity even more so, that the layout is not too exotic or dependent on settings, software versions etc.
I got another one from someone yesterday (a frequent nit) where they put the ‘so and so, page 2′ in the body, and on my version, it ended up in the middle of page 2 (they should have put it in a header).
People put a lot of misguided effort into them sometimes not realizing the product they think they’ve created is not what others see.”
Couple random comments:
“Personally I like it. However, companies are shying away from this, too much liability with regard to lawsuits of folks rejected for age, race, sex etc. May be a podcast version would work hard to tell “
5 Million Green Jobs Is a Mantra
By: Jeff – Print This Post Print This Post
Two job recruiters named Ryan Drummond and Chris King had been thinking about starting a Web site to serve the emerging green economy.
The field is already crowded. But they wanted to do something new.
Getting laid off was just the push King needed to help hatch the plans. He and Drummond, along with Jean William whose background is in search engine optimization launched 5milliongreenjobs.org on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20.
If the Web address has a familiar ring to it, that’s because the pledge of “5 million green jobs” was uttered throughout the 2008 presidential campaign. President Barack Obama has continued to utter the phrase as part of his plans to rebuild the American economy, by creating guess what 5 million green jobs in the next 10 years.
I spoke recently with Drummond, King and William about their plans for the site, which already boasts jobs from more than 60 companies, including heavy-hitters like windmill giant Vestas.
5MGJ.org, still in development, will include a section to connect military veterans with green jobs after they return to U.S. soil. Other sections will allow for social interaction between job seekers. Drummond, King and William also promise some surprises, and a “marketing explosion” in April 2009.
Ryan Drummond, 27, is a senior associate at Starpoint Solutions in Stamford, Connecticut. King, also 27, was working for TEKsystems in Manhattan before the pink slip. William, 39, also lives in Stamford.
“People instantly think that they need to be some sort of green engineer to land a green job,” Drummond said. “We’re getting jobs on the site that are accounts payable and project manager … We’re seeing that there are just everyday jobs that are in renewable energy-type companies.”
The site developers will be part of the Wall Street Green Trading Summit on April 1 and 2. It’s billed as the longest running environmental finance event in North America.
